WEDDING SPOTLIGHT: Kate & Dan’s Historic Wedding

Kate & Dan met in college, and recently renewed their friendship. Photography by Mike Roberts of Sheridan was kind enough to share this wedding with us, which was also held on he & his lovely wife’s 47th anniversary! Kate, an artist, had a request of Mike – that the wedding be captured in strictly black & white imaging. (As a side note, Kate’s mother and Mike taught together at Big Horn High School!) Also special – this was the first wedding held in the historic Sheridan Inn following the extensive remodeling that took place over the last year. The renovations allowed for guests to stay in the inn, a feature not available previously. (As another ironic side note, Mike also photographed the last wedding held at the inn before its closure & renovations – on September 29, 2012!

Thanks to Photography by Mike Roberts for sharing this beautiful wedding at the historic Sheridan Inn – congrats to Kate & Dan!

A Day in the Life of Organizing a Showstopper Wedding at Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody – by Josie Hedderman, Custom Events Manager for Buffalo Bill Center of the West …

It was a Sunday early in September. For many moons, I had been planning a beautiful outdoor wedding reception in the garden. With six hours to set up and prepare the magic, I looked to the skies to make a judgement call. A dark mass had been accumulating over Cedar Mountain and the deep, mottled gray extended through much of the visible sky.

We spent the next several hours dressing the tables with linens, name cards, glasses and delicate china. We arranged the fragile crystal centerpieces. In neat rows, champagne glasses lined up near the three-tiered, velvet cake. The band plugged in their sound system and tested their instruments. All the while, the sky continued its ominous, ever-threatening approach. “It’s NOT going to rain,” I said again, this time with just a hint of fear wrapped around the tip of the final word. It was 6 o’clock. Guests were on their way from the chapel. I half scolded and half pleaded with the rain gods and refused to allow myself to picture the kind of damage a Wyoming rainstorm could inflict on our delicate, intimate garden dinner.

As the bride made her way to the garden, the sun came out and chased the storm clouds away. It was a moment of perfection. The timing couldn’t have been better.

Wedding guests indulged in delicious food, and champagne glasses clinked to a touching toast before they danced the night away.

It was a gamble worth taking.

Thanks to Lacey Dale Photography of Lusk for sharing this wedding with us!

So imagine this … Anne and Andrew were married June 6, 2015, right after the Thursday flash flood in Lusk that took out the overpass on the north side of town (the side heading to Andrew’s family ranch where they planned to be married). THEN, the Niobrara County Fairgrounds were taken over by the Red Cross, National Guard and unfortunate families who lost their homes in the flood took over the reception site … so needless to say, they had to improvise. The Niobrara Country Club, in Lusk, became the new location, and the couple and their families pulled it off beautifully!

Here’s what the bride, Anne, had to say about the rushed change in plans …

“Although the flood caused havoc and destruction, it really showed what the community is about. We had planned to have our wedding at the fairgrounds in the beef barn. Being the planner I am, we set up a lot on Wednesday hoping the rest of the week could be relaxed.  Then we woke up on Thursday morning to find half of the town underwater.  We worked Thursday and Friday, alongside others, cleaning up the town and pumping out basements, and Friday decided we had better figure out where the wedding was going to be.  All roads around Lusk were closed, with no power and no potable water. Nevertheless, we knew we wanted to have our wedding in Lusk, even if our expected 500 weddings guests would only be 50.

“Friday afternoon we found the country club was open, and after a little tweaking with the power, we were set.  Saturday morning we set up for the wedding. We tore everything down at the fairgrounds that we had set up previously, and with the help of many, many family and friends, we set up a tent that a group had lent us.  Our table and chairs and flower people went around road closures signs to get here.  For some unknown reason I decided to do my own flowers (which I had NO experience doing), and a woman that I barely knew, along with some amazing family members and friends, came out of the woodwork to create the centerpieces and bouquets. Our band went around booms and convinced highway patrolmen to let them through. And our guests form Casper (which is where I am from), Nebraska, North Dakota, Colorado, Hawaii, Wisconsin, and everywhere in between traveled different routes and, once again, through road closures to come celebrate. My hair and makeup person spent Saturday morning helping us set up, and hurried to make all of my bridesmaids and myself feel amazing without being a minute late.  People simply showed up to help, my family (which is quite large) all made it, and spent the days leading up, with what we thought would be filled with massages, pedicures, and golf, working their tails off.

“Our photographer was a dear friend of ours, and we were her first wedding experience. She wowed us with her skill, as you can see in the amazing photographs. It turned out to be the best day, and although we had a little rain shower after the ceremony, it brought a double rainbow, which made for a beautiful night. I just really wanted to share our story not necessarily because I want to talk about our wedding, but more I want people to know about this community, our family and friends that helped pull off a day we will never forget.”

Being the planner I was too when it came to our wedding, I am shuddering at the thought of what Anne & Andrew had to go through! This is an incredible story. Way to improvise guys – the moral of the story is they celebrated their love & marriage, no matter what happened to the best laid plans. Thanks to Lacey Dale Photography for sharing this event with us – and congrats to Anne & Andrew! Thank you so much for sharing this with us!

‘Til Next Time … Keep Sending In Those Weddings!
