COLOR INSPIRATION: Burgundy/Marsala (Pantone Color of the Year 2015)

Pantone’s Color of the Year 2015 was Marsala, which I’m sure someone will say is different than burgundy, but I can’t see it. I do have to admit that when I saw that, I kind of had a moment to struggle with that choice. I’m a child of the 90s, and burgundy was all the rage when I was a teenager & in college. I had one of those dresses from Maurices in burgundy with the shoulder pads, the heavy fabric and the heart-shaped cut-out below the neckline with a little pearl dangling. I believe it was my husband’s brother’s first wedding (1995) that had burgundy as the main color. I guess I reflect on burgundy with the same conflict of emotion as I do when I see a teal suggestion, or the oh-so-popular-in-the-mid-2000’s black & red wedding (which was another husband’s brother’s wedding, in 2006). Funnily enough, when the first brother’s second wedding was held in 2009, their color was also red, and when my own brother was married in 2008, their color was black. Struggling to not have a moment again … What I would have given to have had a sister of my own to have some fun with color!

But don’t take my moment as a reason to have one yourself. The beautiful thing about colors and fuddy duddies like me is that we have a much broader ability now than we did 20 years ago to pair colors with variable neutrals and make them new again – and much, much more desirable. So with that in mind, I forced myself to pick up the study of burgundy and see what had evolved.

I was pleasantly surprised. Burgundy is being treated with the respect it deserves, yet the temperance it requires. Burgundy is a very color-rich jewel tone. It carries weight and, because of that, it screams ‘elegance’ – which I think is why it was seen as a perfect tone for formal gowns and weddings in the 90s. Weddings & elegance go hand-in-hand. But it can become too somber, *too* heavy, if one doesn’t pair it with some lighter colors. Enter today’s treatment of burgundy – and where it’s winning me over again … Scroll on, and click on the image for the website from whence it originated. (And thank God for Pinterest!)

Elegance personified with this heavy use of burgundy ... but I like the way their lightened it through their minty green greenery, repeated in the stationery, and the hints of light, light pink & purple.

Now I LOVE this! Who would have thought the whimsy of sunflowers with the solemnness of burgundy?! It makes the effect light yet sophisticated, perfect for an outdoor wedding. Bravo on the choice of burgundy in the full tie on the gentlemen - the grey tux is a perfect major color player!

This was a Pinterest find that clicked through to coukgarden.blogspot.sn but didn't really go anywhere. Again, though, the use of burgundy is lightened with pale pink and a little cream. I wish we had thought of this in the 90s!

Now this is a fascinating combination, and would be smashing for a fall wedding! Navy and burgundy are both heavy colors, although navy is a beautiful neutral and really lends masculinity to the elegance of burgundy. The rich brown and greens are crucial to tie the two colors together ... the thing that I especially love, though, is how these colors combined make white just absolutely pop! The bride's gown, the groom's shirt and the white of the cake look crisp and fresh - what a way to make your whites really pop!

Downpour Wedding

Thanks to Tara of Blushing Crow Studio in Pinedale for sharing this beautiful – and soggy – wedding from Fort Williams Guest Ranch. While Shaunna & Riley’s September 14, 2013 event had a *little* water added, I LOVED the smiles, the laughs, the way that they carried on like this was exactly the plan…the perfect day that these two created with lots of personality. Congrats to these two – what a lovely example on the art of getting married and loving the day no matter what happens! (And I have to add – I believe it was a little ironic that fishing seemed to be a running theme…just sayin’…AND I want Shaunna’s shoes, and am in LOVE with her butterly bouquet. Just sayin’ that too.)

Thanks to Leather-n-Lace Photography of Evanston and our friend Lacee Sims for this beautiful wedding spotlight! I’ve known Stephanie for years through Wyoming Job’s Daughters, where she is a mover & shaker and a sweet, sweet girl…Ryce is a lucky guy! Here’s what Lacee has to say about this personality-filled wedding:

Stephanie & Ryce were married September 21st  2013 at the episcopal church in Evanston, Wyoming. They have been dating for 8 1/2 years after meeting at a Job’s Daughters/DeMolay event. Ryce & his family are from Story Wyoming,  Stephanie & Ryce worked hard to maintain this long distance for 6 + years until Ryce made the move to Evanston and started working making fantastic metal works! These two are very involved in family & community projects and traveled to New Orleans in 2009 to aid in Katrina relief. Stephanie just attained her nursing degree and is working at the hospital. They will reside in Evanston in their newly purchased home after their honeymoon back to New Orleans for a cruise that takes them to Belize and other exotic ports of call. Sephanies father performed the ceremony for them. It was a beautiful & special day with many sweet touches found. I want to thank my second shooter Tammy, for all her wonderful work again!

Thanks again to Lacee of Leather-n-Lace Photography of Evanston for sharing Stephanie & Ryce’s day with us! Congrats to these two!

Thank you to Ardent Photography of Laramie for sharing this super fun western wedding with us! Meghan & Dan were married in a blaze of their style…and I’m totally digging it! Check out these shots – – I love Ardent’s attention to detail and emotion-capturing photography…here’s what Stephanie of Ardent has to say about their day…

Venue: Private Ranch/4-H Building – Lusk, WY

Dress: Mountain Valley Bridal – Laramie, WY

Floral: Fresh Flower Fantasy – Laramie, WY

Cake: Cakeworks – Cheyenne, WY

Photos: Ardent Photography – Laramie, WY

DJ: American Soundwave – Laramie, WY

There are traditions when it comes to weddings… While tradition definitely has its place we absolutely love clients who focus on making their day unique and special, a real reflection of who they are as a couple. We love weddings full of thoughtful little details as unique as the love that we are hired to photograph. When it comes to being unique, personal and about as untraditional as possible, Meghan and Dan have that down pat!

You might remember the awesome snowmobile engagement session we did with these two. Filled with snow, crazy jumps and bow hunting their photos were far from the normal engagement photos you can browse in our local paper. That is why we weren’t surprised when on their big day their personalities, likes and style shone right on through. We LOVE this wedding. Although Rick and I are self admittedly more of the city slicker type, seeing cowboy culture strewn throughout their decor, attire and atmosphere was an absolute pleasure to photograph. Highlights include their ‘Wyoming Whiskey’ cake, Meghan’s camo gown, the gorgeous way Ruth from Fresh Flower Fantasy incorporated antler sheds into the bouquet and of course who could forget Dan’s custom tux! Did I mention their gorgeous ceremony site which has been in their family for years? Ah I could go on and on but in this case I think it might be best to let their awesome photos do the talking.

PS: We dare you to try pulling off their ‘high five’ kiss… Now that is what you call awesome

Thanks to Stephanie of Grateful Heart Photography in Rock Springs for sharing this spotlight with us! Here’s what Stephanie had to say about this sweet couple & their special day…

“This is Clay and Heidi! They were married May 25, 2013 at Lakeside Lodge in Pinedale, Wyoming. They didn’t have a bridal party — but since this was both their second marriage, they had their children on both sides sitting by their sides for hte ceremony. The bride’s two sons gave her away. All together, they are a family of nine! Clay has three children and heidi has six (she had quadruplets!). Big, loving family — and I have to say they were all wonderful children & very well mannered. They should be very proud parents! I really liked this family. They are living in Nebraska, but the bride is from Rock Springs.

Services were provided by… Hair: Kelly at JAK’s Boutique, Pinedale; Flowers: Jacee at JAK’s Boutique, Pinedale; Catering:  Lakeside Lodge, Pinedale; Cake:  Diane Alexander, Old Wyoming Catering

Thanks again to Stephanie of Grateful Heart Photography in Rock Springs for providing this spotlight! CONGRATS to Clay & Heidi and best of luck to you and your sweet combined family! What a beautiful thing to see.

Thanks to Caiti Jackson Photography of Gillette for sharing this beautiful wedding with us! When you live in Wyoming, a western-themed wedding is definitely appropriate. The thing that I love about western is that you can vary its influence to meet your style — either a pair of fab cowgirl boots on your attendants paired with a cute cocktail dress…hats on the gents or hay bales for the guests to sit on…the bride rides in on her favorite horse, or simply some Mason jars with lemonade and a big open dance floor… It’s romantic no matter what you do. I’m so excited to feature this engagement from Dreaming Hollow Photography of Laramie! Catherine is a former Miss Wyoming, and her fiance, Clint, is just the most picture-perfect cowboy one could imagine… What a great set of images! But I’m going to quit yapping and share what Tessa of Dreaming Hollow has to say about these two…

When Clint and Catherine contacted us about their Engagement portraits, they mentioned right away that one of the angles of their love story that they wanted us to document was how they met in the soup kitchen of their church.  They asked if they could use our kitchen for part of the photo session.  Of course we said yes!

We asked Clint and Catherine if they would share a bit about their experience falling in love and how they met.  Here it is, in their words:

“Without God opening the doors and shining His light on their hearts, Clint and Catherine wouldn’t be where they are today: in each others arms. After numerous (secret) attempts by their mutual friends to set them up, Catherine’s dear friend and co-worker, Emily finally gave the situation to God and thanked Him for taking care of the rest. Soon after, Clint and Catherine locked eyes across the room at the High Plains Community Church soup kitchen, Sunday, 11/13/2011. They poured their hearts out to each other while serving pea salad and made plans to see each other again. The rest is history! Through Miss Wyoming experiences and adventures in Colorado and Wyoming, Clint and Catherine grew to be inseparable, despite their busy schedules. After a summer trip to Dallas to meet Catherine’s family, the deal was sealed. Clint proposed Labor Day weekend after a beautiful horseback ride in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The love, the moment, and the proposal couldn’t have been more perfect! With their friends and family by their sides, the couple plans to say, “I do” beneath Devil’s Tower on August 31, 2013.”

Thanks to Dreaming Hollow Photography of Laramie for sharing this great engagement spotlight — be sure to click here to see part one of their shoot, from the Snowy Range Mountains of Southeast Wyoming!
